Why Typography Matters

After reading Benjamin Bannisters article, Why Typography Matters, where he addresses the importance of how you design and apply typography with an example of how the 89th Oscars award show dropped the ball on that though process. This article helped me better understand that although design is there for visual pleasure, it is just as important (if not more in the case of the Oscars award cards) to be easy for people to read. Our brains and our eyes are constantly searching through information and deciding whether it's important or not to retain, but by using a few techniques such as a hierarchy of the information in the text or adjusting type weight, designers can manipulate what is most important and what they want viewers to be drawn to first. The article also gave a great example of understanding what your design is being used for and what is best for that specific application. In the case of the Oscar's, announcers of awards have only a few seconds to view the card and then read the winner aloud.... to hundreds of thousands of people. It is vital for designers to display the information in a way that is clear and leaves room for no misinterpretation.
