After reading the "Guide to Finding Public Domain Works Online" article and watching the "A Shared Culture" video I have a better understanding that the copyright process is there for a good reason, to protect creators and their works. However, still letting these works be released into public domain well after the creator created the piece and has received the benefits of the work, therefore allowing the public to access and manipulate the material how they please. I do though find it odd that once certain works enter public domain, companies or institutions are able to claim copyright on it, then owning any rights and benefits from the work themselves. This personally feels like a weird way for them to profit off of someone else's work, especially if it's been so long (article states work before 1850 is generally public domain). It also made me realise just how important understanding the copyright laws of something your'e going to possibly use are, especially considering every country has different laws about public domains. Copyright allows for sharing and collaborating of all forms of creation throughout the world, while still safely crediting the producers.
