Experimental SoundScapes: "College Experience"

Updated: Nov 26, 2022

For my project I took a look into the ‘college experience’. More specifically the anxiety and stress that comes with being a student. The audio starts off a bit repetitive and slow, portraying the constant day-to-day cycle of college with sounds taken from campus. I had to really think about what sounds make you think ‘college’. But slowly the audio gets louder and speeds up with a clock ticking and heartbeat in the background, creating an overwhelming feeling. The breaks of typing and alarm clock going off show the repetition of day-to-day life as well, but are also inspired by Christian Marclay’s “Open Air” for BBC radio, with chaos going on and then breaks of more comprehensible sounds.

Class Critique:

-Theme and "college experience"/ anxiety of school concept came through well in the audio.

- Enjoyed that it contrasted from Loud to Quiet, but that the "quiet" was still unsettling.

- Increase in tempo & repetitiveness made it feel as though the days were blending as it went on.

- Felt that it was slightly too repetitive, could've separated the days slightly or added other elements.
